Brody and Ehrlichman (1998)

This textbook is a tour de force. Focusing on contemporary research rather than dated theories, this is the best research-oriented personality textbook in the field. Ideas are presented in a conversational style, with an emphasis on why the research is relevant to students--that is, why should anyone care? The Big Five, the PEN model, intelligence, behavior genetics, and evolutionary psychology are all covered in detail, and even the unconscious is not left out. Whether or not instructors of personality classes ultimately choose this textbook, they should certainly master its contents.
